Increase Your Chances of Winning the Lottery With These 13 Tips

If you’ve ever played the lottery you know just how hard it is to win. It almost defies common sense, as you feel as though you pick the numbers and eventually they’ll come up.

And when they do you’ll win a huge prize. However, it’s just not that simple, and you can play in hundreds of draws and only win insignificant amounts, or nothing, each time.

When you look at the odds, the more numbers you hit in a draw the harder it becomes. Getting four numbers isn’t twice as likely as getting two numbers; it’s exponentially higher probability wise. To be precise, if you were playing Powerball the probability of hitting two numbers and the Powerball is a little over 1 in 700, with the odds being over 1 in 900,000 of hitting four numbers and the Powerball. So, as you can see it’s very tough to win big.

Although I’m not claiming the below lottery strategies will help you win big and hit the jackpot in Powerball or Mega Millions, they will help you improve your chances of winning overall. The likelihood of winning anything in a Powerball draw is around 1 in 24, and by following these strategies you’ll be able to improve your chances a little bit.

Keep in mind that in these large lottery draws, someone must win and many people do. So, follow these and I hope you contact me one day with the news that these little strategies helped you strike it rich.

1 – Buy a Quick Pick

You have two main options when it comes to purchasing a lottery ticket and getting numbers. These are buying a quick pick where a computer automatically chooses all the numbers for you, or picking your own numbers manually.

While you could theoretically win doing both, it will be easier to buy quick picks and save you a lot of hassle. Numbers have no meaning or value in the lottery so by randomizing your selections you’ll have the best possible chance of winning.

2 – Get More Tickets

Although this seems quite simple, you’d be surprised how many people don’t do it. When you’re playing the lottery the more numbers and combinations of numbers that you have the more likely you are to win.

While it will of course cost you more money to buy more tickets, your chances will be increased in respect to possible securing a win. So, next time you enter the big Powerball of Mega Millions draw buy a few more tickets to drastically increase your chances of winning a prize.

3 – Investigate the Odds

All lottery games have different odds and probabilities when it comes to winning. A little bit of research in advance will improve your chances of winning, sometimes by a lot. Before you play any lottery game do a little bit of research online, either through your state lottery website or at other online resources, to find out the odds and probabilities of winning.

You should then play in the lottery games that give you the most favorable odds. This is a no brainer, but you’d be surprised at how many people don’t do this and just see the big prizes and play in those games only.

4 – Consider Games with a Second Chance

Many lottery games have a second chance draw where you have the chance to win again if you didn’t have any luck in the first draw. These are like gold for players as they push your ticket value further on the same purchase.

Make sure you check out which games have a second chance and incorporate these ito your game selections to give yourself as many chances as possible of winning.

5 – Be Careful Selecting Special Numbers

If you’re going to pick your own numbers for a draw, make sure that you choose a wide range of numbers that incorporate a good cross section from all available numbers in the draw itself. If you only go with birthdays and other special dates then you may be limiting yourself from numbers one to 31, when there’ll be a lot of other numbers from 32 onwards that you’re missing out on.

I’m not suggesting you don’t use those special numbers in your selections, but you also need to choose some others to make sure you have a balanced approach in each game.

6 – Buy a Ticket

While you can employ several strategies to improve your chances of winning in the lottery, there’s one straightforward way to win, and that’s buying a ticket.

If you don’t buy a ticket you have absolutely no chance of winning. If you do buy a ticket you do have a chance, even though it’ll be very small. This may be simple advice, but the simple fact is that someone wins and for it to be you, you must have a ticket in the draw.

7 – Always Double Check Your Tickets

You won’t have to look too long to find out about major prizes that went uncollected in lottery games. This happens all too often.

If you’re buying tickets with a lot of combinations and games on them it’s quite easy to overlook winning numbers when you’re checking the ticket. To avoid missing out on a big or little win, you should always double check your ticket and even take it back to the store you bought it from to get them to check.

Some games can also be checked online through the barcode or reference number on the ticket.

8 – Don’t Pick Consecutive Numbers

If you’re selecting numbers for a game it’s never a clever idea to choose consecutive numbers. While you may do one or two numbers consecutively, even that is pushing it.

Think about it; how often do you see consecutive numbers coming out in the draws? It never seems to happen. While the odds are the same on consecutive numbers, it just doesn’t seem to pan out that way. So I’d strongly recommend against doing this, even if these numbers hold some sentimental value for you.

9 – Play in a Lottery Pool

One of my earlier strategies outlined how to improve your chances of winning by buying more tickets. While this will work, it will also cost you a lot more money.

If you want to improve your chances of winning by having access to more tickets without paying more, you should join a lottery pool or syndicate.

These are run through workplaces, sports clubs, and even ticket sellers. In a pool or syndicate you’ll have access to a lot of tickets and number combinations which means your chances will increase a great deal.

The only downside is you’ll have to share the prizes with your fellow pool members. While this isn’t great, it’ll still be worthwhile for you to join one if you’re looking for the major prize and nothing else. After all, it’s the life changing money that matters.

10 – Double Check Discarded Tickets

If you happen to pass by a bunch of discarded lottery tickets, wherever these may be, it’s worth it to pick these up and have a quick scan of the numbers.

As I mentioned in a strategy above, it’s very easy to miss a winning combination of numbers, especially on tickets that have many lines of combinations. So, if you come across discarded tickets take and look and double check if there’s a winner amongst them.

At the same time, also look and see if there’s a second chance draw attached to any of the tickets. If there is you should hold onto it and see if you get lucky in that second chance game.

11 – Always Look After a Winning Ticket

If you’re lucky enough to win, whether it’s a small or large one, make sure you take care of your precious ticket. It’s also probably a clever idea to not tell anyone about your win until you’ve received your prize.

Once you realise that you’ve won, a good trick is to sign the back of the ticket with your signature, and place your name there. This will protect you later if anything happens.

Remember, this little paper ticket can have a cash value in the millions of dollars, so you need to treat it as such and make sure you protect yourself against any possible loss before you even get the cash.

12 – Know Your Limits

This isn’t really a lucky strategy to improve your chances of winning in a lottery, but it’s vitally important and I’d like to share it with you anyway. You should always play the lottery within your limits.

As you should know by now, it’s completely random and you’ll need to get seriously lucky to win. You shouldn’t be parting ways with sums of money on tickets which you can’t afford.

You should always set aside a fixed amount to purchase tickets with and that’s all. Never chase your losses or try to up the ante beyond what you can afford, especially when the prizes get bigger. If you stick to this strategy you’ll be able to play the lottery well into the future, which will increase your chances of winning overall.

13 – Don’t Get Caught Up in Lottery Scams

Have you ever checked your spam folder in your email account and realised that you’ve won $18 billion on a lottery you never knew you entered?

Well, this is a lottery scam and while not many people would fall for this, some still do. It’s important to be aware of a few tactics that scammers will try and to know what to avoid when it comes to lottery scams.

The most important thing to remember is that you should always buy a lottery ticket from a registered and official seller. On top of this, you should keep in mind that a lottery organisation will never contact you advising of a win, and that you’ll never have to pay any money to access a prize once you’ve won.

If you keep these things in mind and follow these steps you should be safe against the lottery scams out there.

The lottery is hard to win but many players get enjoyment from dreaming about what they’d do with the money if they win. This makes the low cost of a ticket a small price to pay for a few minutes of happy thoughts.

Use these 13 lucky lottery strategies to help you win more when you buy tickets.
