Chiefs Release Hunt After Footage Surfaces of the RB Assaulting a Woman
According to ESPN, TMZ and multiple other news outlets, the Kansas City Chiefs have released star running back Kareem Hunt after a video surfaced on Friday showing Hunt assaulting a woman in a Cleveland hotel last February. Hunt can be seen kicking and shoving the woman in a hotel where he had an apartment at. The former KC star running back was held back by other men in the hotel hallway as the police were called.
Earlier on Friday, the NFL placed Hunt on the commissioner’s exempt list and made the following statement about the decision:
“The NFL has placed Kareem Hunt of the Kansas City Chiefs on the Commissioner Exempt list, and as a result, he may not practice, play or attend games. The NFL’s investigation, which began immediately following the incident in February, will include a review of the new information that was made public today.”
Kansas City didn’t wait until there was a resolution to the league’s investigation. According to ESPN, the Chiefs made the following statement about releasing Hunt:
“Earlier this year, we were made aware of an incident involving running back Kareem Hunt. At that time, the National Football League and law enforcement initiated investigations into the issue. As part of our internal discussions with Kareem, several members of our management team spoke directly to him. Kareem was not truthful in those discussions. The video released today confirms that fact. We are releasing Kareem immediately.”
Apparently, the NFL and the Chiefs haven’t seen the video before. Hunt apparently lied about the issue and the team was forced to release him after footage of the assault was released on Friday. As for the NFL’s requests to see the tape earlier this year, neither the hotel nor the Cleveland PD would turn over the video to the league.
Kareem was at the practice facility on Friday as the team was preparing for an upcoming game against the Oakland Raiders. After the video was released, the team sent Hunt home immediately.
Kareem Hunt led the NFL in rushing last season as a rookie. He finished the year with 1,372 rushing yards, 455 receiving yards, and 11 total TDs. He was a catalyst for the Chiefs making the playoffs. This year, Hunt was a key member of one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL. Heading into Week 13, Kareem has 824 rushing yards, 378 receiving yards, and 14 total touchdowns.
With Hunt placed on the commissioner’s exemption list, he’s not eligible to participate with another team. At this point, Hunt’s NFL career is in the hands of the NFL commissioner. It remains unclear as to how long he will be on the exempt list and what kind of punishment he will receive.
