Irelands First Responsible Gambling Week
“A great tip – know when to stop,” this is the campaign theme for Ireland’s very first . This campaign is being headed by the Irish gambling industry to raise awareness of how to practice responsible gambling, and as a way to get the conversation started among current gamblers that may be headed in the wrong direction.
What Exactly is Responsible Gambling?
It takes many forms, but some of the cornerstone practices of responsible gamblers are, setting time and spending limits, only using disposable income to bet with (not using money allotted for bills, groceries, and other necessities to gamble with), and remembering that gambling is a pastime used for entertainment, not a means to earn their living or strike it rich.
Responsible gamblers know when to stop, and they don’t feel deprived or irritated if they are not able to gamble or bet on a day they had thought they’d be able to, and the lives and well-being of responsible gamblers are not impacted by their pastime.
Responsible Gambling Week will run the week of February 5th, 2018, and it will be the biggest social responsibility campaign to ever be held in the whole of Ireland.
A chairperson of the Irish Bookmakers Association, Sharon Byrne says,
“the bookmaking industry is using the week to reiterate support for the establishment of an independent regulator and the enactment of the Gambling Control Bill.”
Byrne also says that it is imperative to the success and reach of the campaign that everyone in the industry is actively participating in its message. “What makes this week so important is that the industry is coming together and sharing the same messages to secure maximum exposure and awareness. We want to start more conversations about what it means to gamble responsibly between operators, customers and their friends and families. The industry will also be raising awareness about how to help people gamble responsibly, and will be sharing information on how to access help and support, for those who need it.”
This campaign has its participants taking part in a lot of activities during this week in order to spread the message of responsible gambling. A campaign of the same name found success in Great Britain last October, and Ireland took the initiative to join them on this very important cause.
The activities include displaying posters in their establishments and making responsible gambling pamphlets available to their customers (both online and in person). Making staff the information specialists on responsible gambling, and relaying the messages and campaign theme to their in-person and online customers. Using social media to their benefit in order to spread the message of the campaign, and working with Dunlewey Addiction Services for more information on how to get help.
Additionally, politicians will be briefed and educated about their message, learning what it means to be a responsible gambler, and how they can help by drafting more effective legislation to ensure that responsible gambling is a cornerstone of the country’s ideals.
“Having the whole industry behind Responsible Gambling Week is essential to its success,” Byrne says, “and we have global online sportsbook and casino operators taking part, in addition to betting shops, arcades and gaming clubs, horse tracks, greyhound tracks and tote operators scheduled to run that week.”
