Houston Texans vs Kansas City Chiefs NFL Preseason Preview

These two teams have played against each other 10 times since Houston came into the league. 4 of those contests have come over the last 3 seasons, including the 2016 AFC Wild Card game. The Chiefs hold a 6-4 record in this head-to-head series. Ironically, this is only the 3rd time they have played at Arrowhead Stadium in their 10 previous contests. They split the two previous games at KC.

Houston hosted the Chiefs last year and lost to them in an exciting contest that saw 76 combined points and looked like something out of a video game. We can only hope this preseason game will be at least half as exciting. The Texans are 5-2 over the last 2 preseasons and have the talent to compete as one of the best teams in the AFC. With a healthy JJ Watt on defense and the exciting DeShaun Watson at QB, this team is poised to go a long way in 2018.

Kansas City is also loaded on both sides of the ball. However, they do have a few more question marks on their team than the Texans do. For starters, who will replace Marcus Peters on defense and how will Mahomes do in place of Alex Smith? The Mahomes era officially begins this week, so we’ll definitely get to see how he has progressed during the offseason where he was named the starter. KC is 4-4 over their last 2 preseasons.

The spread opened at 2.5 points in favor of the Chiefs, but it hasn’t changed with most sportsbooks. The Over/Under opened at 35 points, but has come down slightly to 34 total points. You may be able to find it even lower if you do some effective line shopping.

Free Texans vs Chiefs Sports Bet and NFL Prediction: Chiefs (-135)

It doesn’t matter what time of the year it is, playing at Arrowhead is always a tough task. I don’t know if Kansas City has enough offensive depth to win by a field goal. With that said, I do like the Chiefs to win this game at home. The Chiefs posted a 6-3 home record last year as they should’ve gone 7-2, but choked the AFC Wild Card game away to the Titans.

This week, KC will look to take a big first step in the right direction with Mahomes as the team’s franchise quarterback. The Chiefs have surrounded the young QB with plenty of offensive firepower in the backfield and at the skilled positions. I doubt many of them will play tonight, but KC might be able to go out there and get an early TD with whatever starters do play.

The Texans will come into this game looking to rebound after their 2017 season went down the drain due to a season-ending knee injury to DeShaun Watson. This quarterback has brought a lot of excitement to the Texans franchise and a lot of expectations for the team’s success in 2018. It will be interesting to see who all gets some snaps Thursday night for the Texans. Watson could get some playing time, but we’ll be cautiously optimistic that he does.

Everything in the betting data points to the Texans losing by more than 2.5 points. In their last 5 games overall Houston has gone 0-5 ATS. In their last 6 games on grass they’ve gone 0-6 ATS and they’ve also posted a 0-4 ATS record against the AFC in their last 4 conference games.

The Chiefs are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 overall games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 grass games. Last year, they went 6-3 SU and 6-3 ATS at home. The one thing that plays in Houston’s favor is that the last 6 road teams have gone 5-1 ATS.

With that in mind, why risk $110 to win $100 by choosing the Chiefs to cover the spread when you can just take their money line and risk $135 to win $100? You are basically risking an extra $25 bucks to choose the Chiefs to win outright at home. I’ll take that risk.

Until we get at least a week or two of preseason games under our belts and on video, it’s easier to take the money lines when the odds are worth it. Give me the Chiefs (-135) to win at home over the Texans.
